How To Choose a HostGator Plan

If you’re an avid follower of Get Site Go, you know that I’m a huge fan of HostGator. For me, I’ve yet to see any downtime, pricing is great, and support is awesome. You can chat with them online at any time of the day, and they typically always fix any issues for you. At least, they’ll pinpoint the problem or walk you through it.

So if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already decided on HostGator. Good call. But how do you know what kind of hosting plan you’ll need?

Great question. Let’s go!

Head on over to Hostgator. You’ll be greeted with a page similar to this.

I know it can be very tempting to click WordPress hosting, since I assume that’s most likely the platform you’re going to be using. It may also be tempting to go with Cloud Hosting, but every hosting is technically cloud. The other two options, VPS & Dedicated hosting wont be needed until you’re getting 10’s of thousands of users, and I hope you get there soon!

Pro Tip: You can install WordPress SO easily on any of these hosting accounts.

Anything they offer is probably amazing, but to be honest, I’ve gone with their cheaper priced hosting and I’ve been fine. Click the large Get Started Now if you want to get start with a cheaper hosting route.

You should then be presented with three options for basic web hosting.

I once started with the Hatchling Plan when I first started and it was fine; you can start with that, but I recommend starting with one of the other two so you have Unlimited Domains. Once you build your first website, you’re going to get carried away and want 100 more websites. I’ve done it; we all do it.

Either way, you’re safe with any of these options.

From there the rest is pretty simple. You can add on any features that you see fit. Do you research a bit on options you’re not sure about. For example, the SSL Certificate option might make you feel like you need it to be secure, but you only really need this if you’re storing sensitive customer data, typically for e-commerce sites.
